The worst plague that ever struck the planet earth was the bubonic plague, or Black Death. Between 1347 and 1351 somewhere between 75 and 200 million people died in Europe and Asia, which was possibly 1/3 the population of that region.
The coronavirus has shown a mortality rate of around 3% in the general population and up to 14% in people over age 80. Compare those numbers to the common flu which regularly kills 11,000 Americans annually and up to 70,000 in a flu epidemic.
While the media seems to be trying to create panic and chaos, the rational health experts tell us a different story. The coronavirus, or Covid-19, is a form of the flu, or upper respiratory tract infection. Your ultimate defense against Covid is a healthy immune system and some common sense.
Common sense. Avoid blatantly sick people. Sneeze into your elbow. If visiting areas with a high Covid infection rate, bring a breathing mask. Wash your hands regularly, especially after handling items like money and gas pump handle.
Immune system gear up. Of the 37 trillion cells in the adult human body, up to 20 trillion cells are immune cells. The job of the immune system is to recognize “self from non-self”. Are you friend or foe? The immune system, when properly working, can recognize and destroy invading bacteria, fungi, viruses, and more. Keeping your immune system healthy should be a lifelong quest. When facing a new foe, like Covid, nourishing your immune system becomes even more crucial.
What to do?
- Get plenty of rest. Exhaustion leads to immune fatigue. Get your 8 hours of sleep at night, with an occasional nap during the day.
- Maintain proper hydration. Your lungs are constantly creating mucus, which is 99% water, to wash away any infectious organisms that try to colonize the lungs.
- Nourish your body through diet. Eat real food, not fake food. A plant based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, seaweed, mushrooms, and medicinal spices (like turmeric and ginger). Include some organic or free range animal food, such as fish, poultry, meat, eggs, cheese, butter, and eggs.
- Nourish your gut. The 100 trillion “voting board members” in your gut play a significant role in your immune health. Roughly 70% of the immune system surrounds the gut. Make sure you have a healthy daily bowel movement through water and fiber intake and regular exercise. Add some fermented foods to your diet, like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi.
- Optimize your micronutrient intake. Vitamins, like A and D, play a crucial role in your immune system. Vitamins, minerals, ultra-trace minerals (like strontium, lithium, selenium) are critical factors in immune support.
- Detoxification. Avoid excess alcohol intake or unnecessary antibiotics. Keep your environment clean. Toxins interfere with the ability of the immune system to protect you against invaders, like Covid.
- Stay calm. Stress lowers the immune system. Practice your daily meditation and thanksgiving sessions. Be at peace.
We have seen this movie before. SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) was supposed to be a pandemic plague in 2002. Ended up killing 774 people in 17 countries and hasn’t been heard from since. In 2013 the Avian flu was supposed to be the next pandemic. Killed about 35 people and hasn’t been heard from since.
The media has a tendency to panic the public. Disasters sell more advertising. Do not be alarmed. While 15 million people worldwide die from heart disease and no one seems to care, Covid has infected 86,000 people worldwide with 3000 deaths, nearly all in China.
Take care of your body and you will live to a ripe old age. A healthy human body is self-regulating and self-repairing. Do your part in your healthy lifestyle and Covid will be another footnote in the public health textbooks.
