Immune System Functions

In the 1897 classic science fiction story, WAR OF THE WORLDS, author H.G. Wells spins a yarn of a very advanced Martian civilization with unstoppable war weapons to take over the earth.  Spoiler alert: in the end, the Martians die from the microbes that are found in our routine air supply, because the Martians had refined their own climate on Mars to be free of germs, hence their immune system functions atrophied, and they could not tolerate our routine pathogens in the air.

Immune System Functions: The Firewall Between You and Death

By one estimate, there are about 100,000 virus and bacteria pathogens per cubic meter of air that we breath.  Swimming in this sea of pathogens as we do, it should not be surprising that pneumonia (lung infection) kills about 50,000 Americans annually, most of them older and immune compromised.  The Center for Disease Control estimates that 56,000 Americans die annually from the flu, another viral upper respiratory disease.

And that’s just the job of the immune system for outside invaders.  Inside invaders (cancer, infections) are another battle altogether.  Bruce Ames, PhD from UC Berkeley estimated that each cell in your body endures 5,000-10,000 DNA hits, or potentially cancer causing reactions per day.  The immune system is partially responsible for correcting these cancer causing hits.

Vitality of Your Immune System

The link between the vitality of your immune system and nutrient intake has long been established.  We could overwhelm our reader with the abundance of data linking a healthy diet to a healthy immune system.  But we will summarize thousands of pages of concrete scientific information and hundreds of peer reviewed articles into this short and simple chapter.  Here is the soundbite: “optimal nutrition delivers an optimal immune system.”

The greatest catastrophe to strike the planet earth was the Black Plague, often depicted as death riding on a pale stallion.  Sweeping over Europe, Asia, and North Africa, before the plague was done in 1351 somewhere between 75 and 200 million people were killed, by some estimates 60% of Europe.  More than coincidentally, the Plague rode in on the coattails of the Crusades, wars fought when Christians from Europe sought to take Jerusalem from Muslims.  Mix many people from many lands, add in the stress of war, and the common malnutrition that occurs when the farmers go to war and you have the makings of the Plague.  In 1918 the Spanish Flu killed about 50 million people worldwide on the coattails of World War I.

Can the Mediterranean Diet Reverse Disease?

As of this writing, the Covid plague of 2020 has caused 1.2 million deaths worldwide and 237,000 in the USA.  For people under 50, Covid has a 99.9% recovery rate.  80% of the Covid victims in Europe and America have been senior citizens with 3 co-morbidities, such as cancer, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, etc.  And even the highest risk group has a 94% recovery rate.  And the authorities shut down commerce, travel, schools, churches, and the economy.  According to some of the brightest scientists around the world in the Great Barrington Declaration, the lockdown was unwise and caused more damage than Covid.  Unprecedented, unwarranted, and unconstitutional.
